Most guides to choosing a drafting company ask the same seven questions. How long have you been in business. Can I see your portfolio. What software do you use. What's your revision policy.
Those questions are fine. They're also the questions every vendor has already prepared a polished answer for — and they'd apply equally to millwork, structural steel, or landscape drafting. None of them tell you whether a provider can actually deliver an electrical package that gets approved.
The twelve below are electrical-specific. Each one is designed so that a capable provider answers it easily and a weak one deflects. For each, you'll find why it matters, what a strong answer sounds like, and the answer that should end the conversation.
The short version: ask about code editions, who performs the independent check, whether licensed engineering review is included, how resubmittals are handled commercially, and whether they work inside your coordination model. Those five separate serious providers from everyone else.

Before you start: what are you actually buying?
Worth being clear with yourself first, because it changes which questions matter most.
- Drafting capacity — you have the engineering knowledge in-house and need hands to produce sheets. Weight questions 7 through 12 most heavily.
- Technical capability — you need a partner who understands electrical systems and can catch problems you'd otherwise miss. Questions 1 through 6 matter more.
- A coordination partner — you need someone working inside the BIM model alongside other trades. Question 7 is close to disqualifying if the answer is weak.
Most contractors think they're buying the first and actually need the second.
Capability: can they do this specific work?
1. Which electrical codes do you work to — and which edition?
Why ask it. This is the fastest capability filter available, and almost nobody asks it. Electrical requirements differ by country, and within a country they differ by jurisdiction, because states and cities adopt code editions on their own schedules. A provider whose team has only worked to one national code will produce drawings that look right and get rejected.
The edition question matters more than the code question. A provider working to a newer edition than your authority has adopted can create just as many problems as one working to an older one.

Naming the specific codes they've delivered against, asking you which edition your jurisdiction has adopted before quoting, and mentioning that they confirm the adopted edition at project kickoff.
A red flag sounds like
"We follow all international standards." That's a non-answer. So is any response that doesn't include a question back to you.
2. Have you produced electrical packages for my building type — and can you show me one?
Why ask it. A data center, a hospital, a warehouse, and a mid-rise office are four genuinely different problems. Hospitals carry essential-system requirements and heavy review scrutiny. Data centers carry redundancy and density issues that don't exist elsewhere. Warehouses look simple until you hit the high-bay lighting and long feeder runs.
Portfolio breadth is not the same as relevant depth. Every competitor's guide tells you to check the portfolio; almost none tell you what to look for in it.
A good answer sounds like
A redlined sheet from a comparable project, with the reviewer's comments still visible and an explanation of how they were resolved. That single artifact tells you more than an entire capability deck.
A red flag sounds like
Only polished marketing renders, or samples where the project type is never identified.
3. Do you cover low-voltage and fire alarm systems, or only power and lighting?
Why ask it. Scope gaps surface at the worst moment. Many providers quote confidently on power and lighting distribution, then reveal mid-project that fire alarm, data, CCTV, access control, public address, and intercom are outside their scope — or subcontracted to someone you never evaluated.
Now you're managing two vendors on one submittal, and the coordination between their drawings becomes your problem.

A clear yes with specifics, or a clear no with an honest boundary. Both are workable. Ambiguity isn't.
A red flag sounds like
"We can handle that" without naming which systems.
Quality control: what happens before you see the drawings?
This is the section that separates providers most sharply, and it's where generic guides are weakest. They ask "do you have a QA process?" — a question no vendor has ever answered "no" to.
Ask these instead.
4. Who checks the drawings before they reach me, and is it the person who drew them?
Why ask it. Self-checking doesn't work. The drafter's eye slides over their own errors, especially at the end of a long production week. Independent review is the single highest-value quality control step in drawing production, and it's also the first thing cut when a provider is behind schedule.
A good answer sounds like
A named second reviewer, an explicit checklist, and a specific description of what that reviewer looks at. Some providers will tell you the reviewer's seniority and whether they have field experience — a strong signal.
A red flag sounds like
"Our senior team reviews everything." Which senior team member? Reviewing against what? If they can't describe the checklist, there probably isn't one.
5. How do you reconcile panel schedules against the single-line diagram?
Why ask it. This is the question I'd keep if I could only ask one. Mismatches between the single-line diagram and the panel schedules are the most common technical comment on electrical submittals, and they're almost always a handoff error rather than an engineering one — a breaker gets upsized on one drawing during a late revision and never propagates to the other.
A provider who has genuinely produced electrical packages will recognise this question immediately and have a real answer. A provider who has mostly done generic CAD work will not know why you're asking.

A described reconciliation step performed as its own task before submission — breaker sizes, ratings, voltages, circuit counts, and connected loads checked line by line across the single-line, the schedules, and the equipment submittals.
A red flag sounds like
"Our software handles that automatically." Modelling tools help, but they don't catch a manual override on one sheet that never made it to the other.
6. Is there licensed engineering review, and what exactly is being reviewed?
Why ask it. There's a meaningful difference between drawings produced by people with engineering backgrounds and drawings reviewed and signed by a licensed professional in your jurisdiction. Both have value; they aren't interchangeable, and vendors sometimes blur the line.
Be precise about what you need. In many arrangements the contractor's own engineer stamps the package and the drafting provider supplies production capacity — which is perfectly normal, as long as everyone knows that's the arrangement before work starts.

An unambiguous statement of what they do and don't provide, and a question about who will be stamping on your side.
A red flag sounds like
Implying licensed review without stating who holds the licence, in which jurisdiction, and what specifically they're reviewing.
Process: how will this actually work?
7. Do you work inside the coordination model, or draw around it?
Why ask it. These are entirely different services at similar-sounding prices.
Working inside the model means they're in the federated file, running clash detection, and resolving conflicts with mechanical, plumbing, and structure before your drawings are produced. Drawing around it means they're producing sheets from the design drawings and hoping the routing works — which pushes the conflict discovery to the field, where it costs the most.

Naming the coordination workflow and tools, describing how they participate in coordination meetings, and asking what stage your model is currently at.
A red flag sounds like
Treating clash detection as an optional add-on line item without explaining what changes when you decline it.
8. What happens when the architect issues a revision halfway through production?
Why ask it. It will happen. The useful information is in whether they have a process or improvise one.
This question also quietly reveals their commercial behaviour. Some providers absorb minor revisions; others treat every incoming change as a variation order. Neither is wrong, but you want to know which before you're forty sheets in.

A described change-control process — how revisions are logged, how impact on schedule and cost is communicated, and at what threshold a change becomes chargeable.
A red flag sounds like
"We're flexible." Flexible is not a process, and it usually means the conversation happens after the invoice.
9. Can you match our CAD and BIM standards, and what do you deliver?
Why ask it. Drawings that don't match your layer conventions, title blocks, symbols, and file structures create silent rework for your own team. And "deliverables" is where quotes diverge most: native files or PDFs only, model or sheets only, editable or flattened.
A good answer sounds like
A request for your standards document or template before quoting, and an explicit deliverable list naming file formats and software versions.
A red flag sounds like
Quoting without ever asking what standards you work to.
Commercial terms: where quotes and invoices diverge
10. What happens when the submittal comes back for revision — is that included?
Why ask it. This is the single biggest hidden cost in shop drawing outsourcing, and almost no buyer asks it up front.
Submittals get returned. That's normal. The question is whether responding to reviewer comments sits inside your quoted price or arrives as a change order. A cheap per-sheet rate with resubmittals billed separately can easily end up more expensive than a higher rate with two rounds included — and you won't discover that until the first package comes back.

A stated number of revision rounds included, a clear definition of what counts as a revision versus a scope change, and a rate for anything beyond it.

"We'll take care of you." Get it in the scope document.
11. How is pricing structured, and what drives it up?
Why ask it. Each pricing model suits a different situation, and the right question isn't which is cheapest but which matches how your project behaves.

The more revealing half of the question is what drives the number up: sheet complexity, coordination scope, rush timelines, revision volume, and whether a coordination model already exists.

A headline rate with no scope definition attached. A very low per-sheet price almost always means a narrow definition of a sheet.
12. Who owns the files, and how is my project data protected?
Why ask it. You're sending drawings, specifications, and sometimes client information to an external party, often in another country. You need clarity on file ownership, native file handover at project end, NDAs, storage, and access control.
The baseline is a signed NDA, secure cloud storage rather than personal accounts, a dedicated point of contact, and a clear statement that native files transfer to you.

A red flag sounds like
Treating the question as unusual. Every serious provider gets asked this weekly.
How to actually compare the answers
Score each provider 0–2 per question: 0 for a deflection, 1 for a reasonable answer, 2 for a specific answer with evidence behind it.
Weight four of them double. These predict outcomes better than the rest combined:

A provider scoring well on capability but poorly on commercial terms will produce good drawings and difficult invoices. One scoring well on commercial terms but poorly on quality control will be pleasant to deal with while your submittals keep coming back.
One last test that costs nothing: count how many questions they ask you. A provider who quotes without asking about your jurisdiction, your standards, your coordination stage, and your review chain is quoting on assumptions. Those assumptions become change orders.
